Tom Bohrer
Tom Bohrer has over 30 years experience rowing and coaching. He is a two-time Olympic silver medallist (1988 and 1992) and a three-time medallist at the World Championships, earned in the 4- over eight years competing on the US National Team. In 1989, Tom was voted US Rowing Athlete of the Year. In 1992, he was captain of the US Olympic Rowing Team.
Since 2008 Tom has been the Coach of Mens Rowing at Boston University. Prior to that he was the head coach at Union Boat Club and the head coach for the Wayland-Weston High School boys crew. Tom is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT).
Tom has led coaching seminars for USRowing, The Northeast Rowing Center and the Joy of Sculling Coaches Conference. He has been a regular columnist for Rowing News, writing on technique and training. Tom spent several years as a strength trainer for AccesSportAmerica, a non-profit organization dedicated to the fitness and function of children and adults with disabilities.
During his competitive years he has been trained by some of the best coaches: Ted Nash, Kris Korzeniowski, Curtis Jordan, Mike Teti, Mike Spracklen and Charley Butt. All have had an influence on him as a rower and on how he coaches today. As a coach, Tom feels that every day is a learning experience. Listening to athletes about what they are feeling in the boat leads to new ways of teaching and explaining concepts. Something that I learned from Jim Joy, and I try to think of everyday is to "let the athletes teach the coach". Keeping an open mind and realizing that there are many way to teach people makes coaching fun and rewarding.
Tom still competes at the Master's level in the fall head races and on occasion at CRASH-B's. Tom has won the Masters 1x at the Head of the Charles in 2001, 2002 and 2008 and finished in the top 3 over the past decade. In 2004 and 2005 he won the Masters 8 with his former club - Penn AC.
Tom lives in Concord, Massachusetts with his wife CB and their children.
